NEW YORK STATE ELECTIONS: NYS SENATE -- 2010

NYS SENATE

These are key races in the September primary.  Please visit the NYSUT webpage for a complete candidate list, including all candidates for NYS office.

Bill Perkins for New York State Senator in SD 30 Manhattan.  Senator Perkins has been a longtime friend of CUNY, our students and the PSC.  He has been a vocal  advocate for improving public schools and against privatizing  public education through expanding charter schools.   Now he is being challenged in the primary by a charter school proponent funded by  hedge funds and financial industry backers who stand to benefit.  To volunteer: visit www.billperkins.org/

Velmanette Montgomery for New York State Senator in SD 18 Brooklyn.  Senator Montgomery has fought for expanding programs for minority youth, humane treatment of children and families in the criminal justice system, and  greater funding for public education and CUNY.  Like Senator Perkins, she has been targeted in the primary by a pro-charter school proponent.   To volunteer: call Irene VanSlyke at (917) 531-1149 or visit velmanettemontgomery2010.blogspot.com/

Gustavo Rivera for New York State Senator in SD 33 Bronx.  Gustavo Rivera is a CUNY graduate (Hunter College) with deep roots in his community.  He is challenging the incumbent senator, Pedro Espada, who is under investigation for corruption.  Backed by most labor unions, Gustavo Rivera’s election will help the Democratic Senate majority govern in a more responsible manner.  We are confident that he will be a strong advocate for CUNY and public higher education.  To volunteer: call Gabe Panek at (646) 450-5429 or visit gustavoforstatesenate.com/
